Can You Dig It?

Yup, been gardening.  After taking last year off in discouragement, I'm back at it  It's sort of like an addict who get sober (etc) then gets a whiff of dirt or sees someone else's glorious garden.

I also have renewed my interest in homesteading, but not necessarily living off-grid.  Perhaps if I found some kind of similarly inclined person to live the life together, I might be able to give it a try.  I've been enjoying some YouTube videos by Esther Emery and Nick Fouch.  Here's a link to one of theirs. HERE.  I liked it because of the useful info but also the humor.

Some photos from this year's garden efforts so far.

Late May

Although I have acreage, I also have hungry deer and mean, greedy gophers.  This is the reason I plant so much in pots. And plant within fences.

June 29-30

I am pleased with the progress and even though I had something eating my cucumber to death and a couple of my pumpkins babies turned yellow when they were still the size of a marble,  many things are making me happy.

Cucumber

Gypsy pepper

Acorn Squash

Eggplant blossoms

I also have got some herbs and flowers coming along.

Arctic White  Verbena

Front walkway with assorted deer resistant plants.

Front Porch with assorted herbs and others plants.

That's all for today.  I might have to run to the nursery for a few things.

A Minute in Time

Just now I went out to survey the garden as I've been watering the tomatoes to much and the blossoms have been dropping off.  I watered Monday today is Thursday.  I worry.  But the garden looked fine. No shriveled plants from dehydration.  It's breezy and rather mild so I sat on the old wooden bench that's next to the house and just enjoyed the view.

(This doesn't play like a video, very choppy. I'm sorry)

The hill is always brown in summer, but I rather like it. Just in front of me is the thyme and next to  it an old lavender that's gone a bit woody. The lovely pink oleander then up the hill to the oaks and blue blue sky.  Once more back to the thyme and the nice tall spires that stick out from them.  Weeds I should pull and haven't and, to be honest, may not.  They add something, I think.  Up again to the pine than sprouted all on it's own where I couldn't get anything to grow. Twenty or more years ago.

One minute in time.  So pleasant. A minute among others for which I thank the Lord.

Here's an update photo of the bag I'm making.  Interrupted at the machine yesterday in mid seam.  Back at it today.  Might even finish it.

Rejoice for this is a day that the Lord has made.

Out in the garden

Hi. I must go water, it's going to be 90 something.  Actually, I have done about 2/3 of the watering so only a bit left. Here's what's happening in the garden.

Lettuce.

                                      Cozelle squash blossoming

Pole beans hugging the poles.

Potatoes in a pet food bag.

Knucklehead pumpkin blossom

My white oleander, big

Spiderwort. The newest addition.

Come on, everyone, let's get out there and dig.

Changing the name

Hello, my name is Susan and I'm hopeless at finishing things.  Therefore  I am thinking seriously about changing the name of my blog to "Whatever".  Then I can write about whatever I want to and perhaps throw in some finished projects whenever.  Maybe it should be called  "Whatever Whenever"?

On March 9, I posted a picture of my next project.  Another baby dress, remember?
I took it out of the bag again and found I had it partially sewn, but today I wrapped it back up and am sending to the the Hospice thrift shop in hopes someone will make it up.  There are also two blouses I have cut out and they are going too.

I am sorry to say that I no longer have any interest in finishing those things.  There are some others I will finish.  Maybe.

I am so thankful to the Lord that we are given second (3rd,4th 5th etc.) chances.  The new goal is to clean and tidy my sewing room. Weed out and replant some of my fabric (it is the first day of Spring) and see what grows.

I belong to the Hangtown Fibers Guild and every month they have a raffle.  I'm donating yarn and knitting books to them to make room.
And you know what, I'm not going to buy any of it back.  Did you see the photo of my loom?

I bought this at the Guild campout auction 2 years ago.  Someone had donated it.  I'm thankful they did.  Perhaps others will be thankful for the things I donate.

The weather is so lovely now.  Chilly in the mornings and evenings, warm and pleasant in the afternoons.  I've been planting seeds and digging weeds so I can try once again to have veggies and potatoes. I haven't a photo of this year's efforts, but here are some from last year.

I love my enclosed, raised bed garden built for me by Buddy Crook who is also the one who put the new siding on my house so the woodpeckers --who plagued us for years-- now leave us alone.  He also built my new deck to replace the 28 year old one dying of dry rot.  Mind you, he did not do it gratis.  Never-the-less, I am thankful to him.

My sister likes her socks. And I am needling along on my second yellow sock, here is the first one, which fits well and feels so good on my foot.

I love socks I only wish I could knit faster.  So I could make more socks.  Do you remember my sock post?  Well,  what can I say?  I love socks.

Here's what going on with the Finnish towels.

I've knotted the ends into bouts and tied the bouts onto the back apron bar.  Soon, maybe tonight, I'm going to wind on so I can get ready to weave those lovely (sigh) towels.  Stay tuned.

It's Spring and lambs are being born all over the place.  These were born at Meridian Jacobs and are darn cute.  They are too.  Photo credit to Robin Lynde, the owner of Meridian Jacobs.

For more great photos and other interesting stuff, go  here  for Robin's blog or here for the website.   That's all for today.  Happy Spring.

Oops

As I started to work on Sewing Project #2, I realized that the pattern I posted here was not actually the one I cut out for this red blouse.  So here is the correct one.  Again my close-up photos are not very clear.

I'm making the short-sleeved top like the two in front, but no skirt or slacks.

I have also been sewing for the theatre as I mention.  Doing repair work, taking out old stitching and making some cravats.  You know in the early 1800's in France men wore cravats rather than ties.    The costume coordinator plans to have some group sewing days. We'll see what happens.

Brocade and satin cravats, white breeches, a ruffled shirt and other such things. Enough for now.

And what about the garden? Garden? Yes, just a couple of photos.  It's because veggies and flowers are so wonderful.

A hellebore.

A daylily

My first bell pepper.

My raised bed all fenced in and veggies growing.

Thank you for visiting.  Please come again.  You never know what might be waiting.
